By teachers of color. For teachers of color.

April 26-27, 2024 | Charlotte, NC

We're back for a third year to celebrate North Carolina’s educators of color!

The #TeachingInColor Summit is a gathering for educators of color from across North Carolina to fellowship, exchange ideas, discover best practices, and uplift each other. This year’s event will be April 26-27 in Charlotte and is open to all educators, whether you’re pre-service, in-classroom, or retired. If you support educator diversity, you’re invited!

This year, we’ll have some new and exciting events, including Educator of the Year awards during an opening reception on Friday and a Research Symposium on Saturday.

Featuring a conversation with Tyler James Williams

Tyler James Williams is the two-time Emmy nominated and Golden Globe Winner for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, Comedy or Drama for his role as ‘Gregory Eddie’ in the hit award-winning series Abbott Elementary. After hitting it off with Quinta Brunson on A Black Lady Sketch Show, she specifically wrote the Abbott Elementary substitute teacher character with Williams in mind. He can also be seen recurring in the sketch comedy History Of The World: Part II. Perhaps most notably, Williams was discovered at the age of four for Chris Rock’s Everybody Hates Chris, which he starred in for four seasons.

On the feature film side, Tyler can be seen in the critically acclaimed film The United States Vs. Billie Holiday (2021), playing Lester ‘The Prez’ Young, alongside Andra Day, who received an Oscar nomination for her turn as Billie Holiday. Previously, Williams co-starred in the indie comedy The Argument directed by Robert Schwartzman, and starred in The Wedding Year (2019) opposite Sarah Hyland. He played a pivotal part in Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit (2017) alongside Will Poulter. Williams also had a starring role in the Sundance winning feature Dear White People (2014). In addition, he appeared opposite Craig Robinson and Kerry Washington in Peeples (2013) for Lionsgate and in Paul Feig’s Unaccompanied Minors (2006) for Warner Bros.

Born in Yonkers, New York, Williams lives between New York and Los Angeles.

Educator of the Year Awards

The #TeachinginColor Summit has always been our way of celebrating educators of color. This year we’re taking it one step further with Educator of the Year Awards!

These three awards will honor outstanding educators (including teachers, school staff, and administrators) of color across North Carolina. The winners will be announced at the Summit's opening reception on Friday, April 26.

Research Symposium

As part of the Summit, we are hosting a Research Symposium to highlight research on the intersection of race, ethnicity, gender, language, and education.

We welcome research proposals from university faculty, researchers, educators, activists, youth, parent advocates, graduate and undergraduate students, nonprofit leaders, and others.
