We, at CREED, are absolutely heartbroken at the loss of Cumberland County Board of Education member Porcha McMillan. Porcha was the Board Fellow in the inaugural cohort of our North Carolina Equity Fellowship. She was a radiant personality with an unmistakable passion for educational equity.
“She cared so much about serving all students, but especially those on the margins,” said Executive Director James E. Ford.
Porcha was a true champion for children, who took up the mantle of leadership on her local board of education to give voice to the voiceless. “I think because of Porcha’s position as a board member, we as Equity Fellows, kind of looked at her as our lead”, said Rodney Pierce, Teacher Fellow from Nash-Rocky Mount Schools.
Porcha McMillan was a Public Administrator and a member of a number of organizations, including: Executive Board Member of NC Caucus of Black School Board Members, Board of Director for North Carolina Parent Teacher Association, Advisory Board Member for the Cumberland County Community In Schools (CIS), Member of the Council of Urban Boards of Education (CUBE), Member of Cumberland County NAACP, Member of Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), Member of CCS Association of Teacher Assistants, Member of Cumberland County Pathways for Prosperity Core Leadership Team and Member of the North Carolina Central University Alumni Association.
Porcha was chosen as one of four North Carolina Equity Fellows in 2019. Director of Operations Janeen Bryant remarked, “Her enthusiasm about this work was contagious. She will be terribly missed”.Press Release
